LIAS in Culture and Society is primarily aimed at international researchers in their early career phase who would like to contribute their research to the institute's program.
Fellows from different disciplines of the humanities and social sciences enter into scholarly exchange organized around different topics and perspectives, aimed towards co-creative observations and insights. As such, fellows receive the necessary time and space resources as well as a stimulating research environment. LIAS offers different types of fellowships: fellowships, senior, artist, public, faculty fellowship (for further information, please, scoll down).
The fellows are selected by an international advisory board in collaboration with the directorate. The advisory board consists of renowned scholars from university institutions in the global North and South whose research exemplifies the work at LIAS in Culture and Society. Selection criteria are as follows: the originality of the research approach, the academic quality, the correspondence to the outline of the LIAS, and the potential for co-creation and collaboration with other fellows and members of the university community.
Weekly colloquia, the exchange with researchers at Leuphana University of Lüneburg, as well as the dialogue with cultural producers, social and political actors promote the individual research projects at LIAS. Also, fellows are invited to participate in the universities' activities. Last but not least, the fellows can initiate intra- and extra-academic exchange formats to bring their research to the professional or broader public. LIAS-fellows thus benefit from the many opportunities for inter- and transdisciplinary as well as international exchange. The working language of LIAS is English.
A communication manager will assist the fellows in their publishing needs and will communicate the research to a broader audience. Also, a fellow support manager will offer assistance in navigating practical matters concerning life at university and in Lüneburg. Fellows will be supported in their research by student assistants who will help in navigating campus research resources.
A workplace at the central university building by Daniel Libeskind is provided. For fellows who bring their partner and/or family the university provides support. In addition, fellows (except faculty and public fellowships) are provided with an apartment or financial support for an apartment in Lüneburg for the duration of their stay at LIAS.
Fellowships
The fellowships primarily give young researchers who have already completed a successful post-doctoral phase up to early assistant professors/W2 the freedom for research as well as a suitable framework for interdisciplinary co-creation in a career phase that is crucial for their long-term research performance.
The funding also encourages to address societal challenges an essential motive of the interest-driven and at the same time profile-building research.
The fellowships are publicly advertised (calls for application) and have a regular duration of one year.
Senior Fellowship
Senior Fellowships are aimed at renowned researchers whose research has already provided important impulses within and beyond the boundaries of academic discourse. They are selected by the international advisory board. The duration of the fellowship is between three and twelve months.
Artist Fellowship
Artists are often the first to identify social problems, engaging them in both material and intellectual terms. LIAS supports projects in the fields of visual arts, literature, film, and sound that correspond artistically to the LIAS program.
Through a connection to the Leuphana University of Lüneburg’s Kunstraum, an artistic project space, the work of the artistic fellows also has an impact on the university and a broader public. Depending on the project, the fellowship has a duration of between three and twelve months.
LIAS awards research fellowships to talented scholars ("Fellows") as well as artists or writers ("Artist Fellows") or established scholars ("Senior Fellows").
The stipend rate for Fellows is 2,100 euros per month. Accomodation in Lüneburg is provided for the funding period. Fellows additionally receive up to 6,000 euros p.a. for family/separation allowance, 3,600 euros p.a. for open access and 400 euros p.a. for stationary.
Senior Fellows and Artist Fellows are invited as stipend holders. Accomodation in Lüneburg is provided for the funding period.
Working at the Institute
The fellows are provided with an office with Internet access (without PC) in the rooms of LIAS, the artist fellow with a studio on campus.
All Fellows pursue their intended research projects or art projects on their own responsibility. In connection with the fellowship, they are not obliged to provide any specific academic consideration or employment. They are also not obliged to give lectures. An employment relationship is neither established nor sought within the framework of the fellowship. The fellowship does not constitute remuneration within the meaning of § 14 German SGB IV.
LIAS strives to offer its fellows an inspiring research environment. A regular stay of the fellows at LIAS (Universitätsallee in Lüneburg) as well as participation in the colloquia is therefore expected. This expectation is neither connected with an obligation to reside nor with a right of direction on the part of Leuphana University.
